We didn't have any parties - we were too busy working! Only joking of course! The weekend seemed to start on a Wednesday when you were a student and there was usually something on at the Union on a Wednesday night. Friday was Owens Park disco night...usually starting off at the Firs for some Carlsberg special. Then Saturday night was party night. We used to cruise up and down roads where students lived....Didsbury mainly and find parties to go into. If you took a bottle of sweet Martini mixed up with lemonade you could usually swap it at the party for something stronger, and if the party wasn't very good you had something to take to the next one! Or you could stash it in the airing cupboard so no-one else could find it and you'd have something to drink when all the beer had gone.

I remember going to G's party out towards Burnage dressed as Alex out of Clockwork Orange - I guess it must have been fancy dress as I didn't normally dress like that. It was an old terraced house like those on Coronation Street with the alleys running along the back of the house. G's next door neighbour had come to the party as her parents were out and, as luck would have it, she obviously had a thing for all white trousers and t-shirts and bowler hats! I went round to her house and we were just having a rest on the settee when we heard a key turning in the lock and her parents were coming through the front door. I legged it out of the back and over the wall into the alley, and came out of the side alley, passing her front door as her dad was looking at me, obviously thinking "What's that dosgy looking geezer doing at the side of our house?". I very politely said goodnight to him and was off back into G's.....probably to retrieve the Martini from the airing cupboard!

We had some absolutely cracking parties when we were in Flat 4 in the Toblerones. As there were 8 of us living that meant there was lots of money for the beer fund and lots of people to invite. And knowing a PhD chemist or was he a biochemist, who brewed his own beer was an advantage as well! Below are some photos from toblerone parties - see who you can recognise!

Me and Christine relaxing in my room at Flat 4 mid party - I hadn't jumped on her honest - she looks pleased to be there! Note the extensive wall decorations - beer was obviously far more important than interior decoration at that point in my life!

Same party and same room - this time it's Christine, Pam and Mart's girlfriend...and a belisha beacon which we had obviously borrowed from somewhere. We sometimes used to set up driving courses down our corridor with the amount of road signs which had been acquired over the course of a year!

Beer was obviously a vital element to the party - possibly even more than members of the opposite sex. Here Mike is allowed the honour of tapping the first barrel-a skilled job!

....and Lefty is given the honour of tasting it - maybe a less skilled job, but a much drier one. Although not without it's own hazards if you forgot when to stop!

A party is obviously a time for romance - at least that's what we used to call it! Here is G demonstrating how to be romantic as are the couple behind him. In fact it seems as if the whole room is at it!

Here's Jenny and Big Tone - obviously sneaking into the party and being caught! And that's Jude from the flat upstairs in the background
