Hmm...where do we start? Maybe an explanation of why this section of the site is called MUGS? It's fairly simple really - MUGS is Manchester University Geographical Society and so this bit of the site is for anyone who was at Manchester University from 1973 to 1977. It's not just for geographers although you may recognise a lot of the names if you were one.

MUGS was dedicated to the pursuit of the highest possible standard of geographical teaching, only overshadowed by the cheapest drinks in Manchester! MUGS discos were therefore attended by a very high proportion of non geographers, hoping to avail themselves of very cheap rum and black and Tartan beer, and hoping to meet one of the beautiful geography students, of which there were many! (I'm including all the blokes in this of course as we're not allowed to be sexist these days!). And what did the MUGS actually get up to?

Not exactly MUGS but definitely students!

By an accident of habitat I started my first year living at Wright Robinson Hall at UMIST so if you were at UMIST you may have a strange feeling of deja vu reading these pages. And of course if you lived in Manchester, or were an avid watcher of Life on Mars, you may spot some familiar stuff. And of course kids this is a great site to grab the dirt on your parents!

If you don't know where to start with the site try my diary's account of the first two weeks at University and relive the excitement of being loose on your own in the world for the first time

Or try this page to look at the strange people who were wandering around Manchester in 1973...but what was Manchester like in 1973!

Did we have parties? Check and see if you can remember them here!

What about the work? Yes we did do some work.....and exams.....but the highlight of a geographers working life is of course the field courses!

You may need to use your back button to move around the site (especially as I add more pages). The intention is you can get lost in here...just like a night at the Conti after too many rum and blacks! You should always be able to get back to somwhere you recognise using the menu buttons on the left. The top button takes you back to the main Lewys home page so you can explore the school stuff from there if you like.

Remember, just like Sam Tyler you'll make it back from the seventies eventually!

About me...if you're remotely interested! Please email me at chris@lewys.co.uk if you have any university or seventies stories or pictures, or any suggestions for the site. And please sign the guest book so that I know you're out there!
