| 1st August 1975 |
Went to town with Hanks Dennis and Deke. Went to the Sal, Yates, The Bell and Frodos which was really Warrows where they sold the famous lumpy scrumpy! Met Jim, Hodgie, Graham and Dio etc. Then we went down to the embankment, presumably for a game of bunny hover under Trent Bridge, and then back to Hodgies. After that we went ghost hunting at Gonalston Mill but didnt find any. I
don't think we ever did find any but as it was supposed to have collapsed and killed a load of kids it was a pretty spooky place! For some reason we were drinking Cinzano Bianco, lemonade and ice. |
| 2nd August 1977 |
Car trouble! Went with Mop to look at a car at Broxtowe. He quite liked it so he told them he will have it. I am halfway through decorating my bedroom and my mum has bought some awful purple paper that I have to put up. Still - at least it will look tidy for a change. Walked up to the Punch Bowl at night.
Bert's car is being welded as it failed its MOT and Jonno is on holiday in the Isle of Wight so we are carless! As a result we had to stay in the Punch Bowl! |
| 3rd August 1974 |
The first of many - we went to the Boat and saw a most amazing group called Nutz! Talked to them afterwards and they are a great bunch of lads. We had a few drinks with them in the dressing rooms and they said we could come backstage to see them any time. We had managed to get invited to a party at Mapperley Hospital which of course was the local asylum. We met some of the nurses in the pub and they had invited us, so altogether we had an excellent night. |
| 4th August 1975 |
A very laid back sort of day. Coral and Gwynneth and Diane came out with us for a few drinks so we went to Fiskerton and Hazelford where the pubs are by the river |
| 5th August 1977 |
Jayne's party at Arnold liberal club. It was ten times better than we thought it would be, probably because I had never seen so many girls together at a party before. We went for a drink first with Bert and his brother Mad Harry and then Mop and I went to the party.
Bert's brothers mates were there, Stach and Lindsay and all the dole office crowd, Sharon and Chris Barks, Tracy, Tracy, Wendy and Janet and assorted second years. I asked Wendy to come out with me again and she agreed. <i> Now this is a bit of a mystery to me as I cant remember who Wendy was! If anyone has any idea please let me know! I did read on in the
diary and discovered that she subsequently cancelled our date as she already had a boyfriend though! |
| 6th August 1974 |
A relatively quiet day. We had a golf chase up to Woodthorpe Park at night.
No - I have no idea what a golf chase is either! Bert, Geoff, Olly, Hank, Paula, Anne, Mart, Anna and I arrived about two minutes after the golf shut so we went to play bowls at Carlton Forum instead but ended up opting for putting first. I won, then we played bowls and went down to the Ferryboat at Stoke for a drink. |
| 7th August 1974 |
Another legendary night! We went to Moor Farm at Bramcote for the usual live music on a Wednesday night and took Jayne Sewell with us. She invited us back for coffee so me, Geoff and Bert went back to her place. Her sister was there and we decided to play
Postman's knock which resulted in a lot of underhand tactics to get our numbers picked out by both Jayne and her sister! Suffice to say that we all got public warnings for timewasting and I
don't know whether Bert and Geoff would agree but my kissing technique certainly improved after an evening with Jayne. <i>This sort of evening should be compulsory fairly on in the National Curriculum - its twenty five years later and I can still remember it! |
| 8th August 1975 |
We all went down to the Bierkeller near the station. It was quite popular for a while, particular as you were positively encouraged to make as much noise as
possible, spill as much beer as you could, and dance on the tables. In fact
didn't Mop knock himself out when he fell off the table once? They played Delilah which is good a German drinking song as you can get, especially the Alex Harvey version! Apparently this is the night I started going out with Dennis. We went to Wollaton Park afterwards. |
| 9th August 1975 |
A bit of a quiet day whichever year you look at! Went to Frodo's for a very quick drink and bought some wine and cider, then went back to
Geoff's for a film show |
| 10th August 1975 |
Went to Boston for a day out with Paula, Geoff and Tats. Not the one in America but the one in Lincolnshire. We tried to find the sea but
couldn't and ended up in Skegness instead! We got sunburnt which is of course obligatory when Northerners find a beach and had a couple of drinks at night. |
| 11th August 1974 |
Got up early which is unheard of for a Sunday. We went to Cisco at night at the Imperial. Angie Ward and Ellen Dawson were both there so we chatted to them. Hilary and Claire were there as well. |
| 12th August 1971 |
We all went over to stay at Tats for the night. We were probably having a game of Risk. I remember we always used to play it at Tats but it was one of those board games which was too long for one session so it was stashed under the sofa until Tats mum or the dog or someone knocked it over. I
don't think we ever got a game finished. When we had gone to bed Tats tall, blonde and beautiful elder sister came in drunk with her equally good looking, dark haired friend. I remember Tats bedroom door
wasn't on its hinges for some reason and when they went to bed they tried to open it and nearly flattened us. Then they shouted for someone to share the bed with them and Hodgie leapt out of bed in his underpants and nearly flattened us with the door again! |
| 13th August 1976 |
Went swimming in the daytime at Papplewick lido but Jude couldn't come out at night because she
couldn't get over to us. We went to the Marquis as usual then on to Scamps in town. All
Bert's brothers' mates were there, and Jonno so we had quite a laugh. Mop and I must have won about 10 challenges on the table football machine. |
| 14th August 1975 |
Went to town to the Salutation, Yates and Frodos. We met Taf O'Toole, our English teacher in Yates and he told us the A level results at school
weren't very good. |
| 15th August 1973 |
A level results day! Woke up at 8.30 but had to wait for Jonno until 10
o'clock. We walked down to school and met Mick Nutting and Pete Newman who had a spare list, so we went through all the results. After that we went to Simons record shop and then to Chesters for a drink, where we met Chris Glaum. Afterwards we went up to
Jonno's to play records and then I went down to school on my bike in the afternoon to write
everybody's results down. My tyre went down and I had to walk back. At night we went out to celebrate and called for Gabbie first. It was my first day back after a couple of weeks in Italy and she
didn't know I was back so Jonno called for her while I hid in the car. We went to Shelford, the Reindeer and the Marquis. |
| 16th August 1975 |
Went to town with Geoff and Paula. Dennis and Deke came back to my place and then we went to
Mick's party which was very good. Gabbie was there and loads of others from school. Went back to Dennis house until 5.30 |
| 17th August 1973 |
Went down for Gabbie at night and down to the Green Man at Oxton. Trev Pinder was there so we had a drink with him then went to the Marquis. Gabbie and I fell out about something which
wasn't unusual. Stayed for a drink there with Hodgie and Hanks while Johnno took Gabbie home |
| 18th August 1972 |
The prospectuses for Manchester and Sheffield Universities arrived in the post. Manchester looks much better than Sheffield and of course they have Manchester United. Spent the evening in the garage with Mop and Trev. |
| 19th August 1971 |
Went to the Chesterfield at night with Sue and Hodgie and Fiona. Sat in
Fiona's garden afterwards with Sue and held hands! Unfortunately she is leaving tomorrow to go and live in London. Saw Mars and everything had an eerie red glow. |
| 20th August 1973 |
Met Gabbie at the Co Op at the bottom of Westdale Lane and walked up to Carlton Forum with her. She said she
didn't know whether she still wanted to go out with me, which is totally understandable after
Mick's party last night. We arranged to meet at lunchtime but she couldn't make it as they changed her lunch hour at the Forum. I set out to meet her in the evening from her D of E. It was pouring with rain and when I got out of the door she walked in the gate, wet through with no coat. She said she could never leave me and we had a really nice evening after all the stress of recent weeks. I gave her my prefects badge which is an extreme honour as most people keep them for life! |
| 21st August 1973 |
Didn't see Gabbie today as shed gone to put a tent up! Grat and Mop came round in the afternoon and we stayed in and listened to records. At night I was going to stay in and watch TV when Tats turned up. We went out with Bert and Grat to the Nags Head and bumped into Angie and Ellun, then down to the Marquis. Me and Tats decided to hitch to Sussex to see
Gabbie, and get some cosmic energy! |
| 22nd August 1976 |
Epic trip to Monsaldale! Bert rang up and said he wasn't going, as usual! Tats came with Mop, Judy and Joanne. Halfway to Derbyshire Mops radiator blew up as he
didn't have enough water in it. We filled it and ended up at a pub near Bakewell, which was very nice except they told us off for playing cricket with their apples! We went for a walk by the river at Monsaldale and had an argument about foxhunting. Did some scree jumping and then Mop got told off for dropping stones in the river from the top of the viaduct - in fact the chap threatened to throw Mop in as well. We headed back to Matlock and into the Fishpond for a drink. |
| 23rd August 1975 |
Went to town and to the Castle, then to watch Notts v Southampton in the afternoon, which was 0-0. In the evening had a reunion with all the Manchester University crowd who live in Nottingham including Jane, Pam, Louise, Don and Mike. We went to the Bell, Yates then the 99 club and back to Marts house. |
| 24th August 1976 |
Hmmm - my 21st! I biked up to Bert's to tell him we were going to Jenny's farm in the afternoon then Mart came round. We all went up to the farm at Newstead Abbey and Jude gave a me a rugby shirt and some West aftershave.
Jenny cut my hair, and then Bert's and we went back to my house to get ready to go out. Mart gave us a lift into town and we started at the Salutation. I had had 5 drinks by the time Jude, Don, Jenny and Joanne arrived. We headed for the Trip next and met Dons brother Mac in town. I
can't remember much after that although I vaguely remember being in Scamps. Jude disappeared and threw up, then I went to look for her and threw up. We went outside and both threw up in the doorway next to Scamps! Don took us home and dumped me at
Jenny's - Jude and I slept on the floor in the living room but didn't go to sleep until it got light. |
| 25th August 1973 |
Set off for Sussex with Tats about 6.45, to go and visit Gabbie who was on holiday there. It took us about 2 hours to get our first lift from Trowell services but eventually went down to Watford in a lorry. Then an old ambulance came off the motorway, stopped for us and went back on it again - they took us to Marble Arch. We got the train to Purley, went for a drink and found Notts had won 4-1 and Forest had won 4-0. Suitably cheered up we got a lift where we had to sit two on one seat with a head through the sun roof and then another couple of miles in a sports car. The driver even took us further south than he was going and bought us a drink. Then it was pitch dark but some kind soul stopped and dropped us a mile from Montague Lodge. We called Gabbie and had something to eat with her, Richard, David and Michelle |
| 26th August 1971 |
Went down to school with Johnno as it was the day of our O level results. We met Mart on the way and he told me I had got all 9 but I
didn't believe him. When we got to school it was confirmed. We went to
Diane's at night to celebrate. Bert Hodgie and Grat got drunk. |
| 27th August 1973 |
Gave Tats his birthday cards and had breakfast, then went up with
Gabbie to fetch the milk. We met Sofia who invited us to go swimming in their outdoor pool. Tats and I swam while they watched. Then we came back and had a music session on the mattresses in the front room,
followed by a game of cricket and fish and chips for lunch. Gabbies mum and dad took us to Beachy Head where we played around in the rock pools and found fossils, whelks, winkles and anemones. We walked up the cliff and caught the bus to Renes where we had tea and met yet another cousin! <P> After that it was back to Gabbies to watch Carry on Screaming and Gabbies mum and dad took us round the local pubs. We were supposed to have scampi as a treat but it was off so we got a chinese takeway and had it back at the house. It rained but it was OK in the tent |
| 28th August 1973 |
Set off from Sussex to hitch home. Gabbie's dad took us a long way to give us a good start but it took ages to get a lift. Two french people took us to Godstowe via a pub at East Grinstead. We
couldn't get a lift after that so we caught the train through London and to Edgware. We waited there about 3 hours and still
couldn't get a lift. We walked to Elstree station and got the train to Nottingham but
didn't get back until about 1.30 am. We had to walk back from the station. |
| 29th August 1974 |
Went across from St Martins to St Marys for the day on the boat with Mart, Anna and Diane. Went shopping for some film for my camera and as I came out of the shop I ripped over a
Labrador. I looked up and saw the other end of its lead was attached to Harold Wilson! We had dinner in a Swedish coffee bar and had a good look
around - its a really nice place. |
| 30th August 1975 |
Went to the World Rowing championships at Holme Pierpoint. The Kiwis won the eights and threw themselves backwards off the boat into the water. To celebrate one of them swam the width of the course climbed a flagpole, cut the flag down, and swam back - very impressive. Notts beat Forest 1-0. We went to the Union at night for some reason, and I fell out with Dennis about dancing |
| 31st August 1975 |
Notts v Forest was on the telly. We went to the Coach and Horses at night and Nutz were on Radio Trent live. |
